After more than two decades of expansion and growth, Magic: The Gathering is going back to its roots with it latest set, Dominaria—and the move will be led by Murderbot Diaries author Martha Wells!

Wells will be the new head writer of the game’s 78th expansion, guiding the story team, overseeing the fiction, and supervising the worldbuilding for this 25th anniversary event.

Dominaria takes the game back to its original plane for the first time since 2006’s Time Spiral. Magic: The Gathering has grown into a vast network of shared planes, but for many characters Dominaria is home turf, so this will be a welcome return for many players. In an interview with io9, Wells said that “Dominaria’s story starts right after the events of Hour of Devastation” and that the characters will travel through much of Dominaria “which gives fans a look at how the plane has changed, and make some allies who may be familiar to longtime players.”

You can read the full interview with Wells (and take a look at some of the gorgeous new artwork) over at io9! Dominaria cards will be available on April 27. You can learn more at Magic: The Gathering‘s site, and in the meantime you can check out the first novel in Wells’ The Murderbot Diaries, All Systems Red—plus her follow-up, Artificial Condition, is set to release in May.
