I love A Wrinkle in Time. It was my first sci-fi—before AWIT I exclusively read realistic dramas about horses and/or dogs (who usually died by the end)—so encountering a world just adjacent to our own, in a story that merrily hopped across planets, discussed religious faith, philosophy, the concept of individualism, was thrilling to me.

To say I’m excited for Ava DuVernay and Jennifer Lee’s take on it is a vast understatement. I’ll attempt to sum up why I’m jumping up and down in anticipation below, with a list of Five Things I Love. Join me, won’t you?

A Wrinkle in Time

A Wrinkle in Time

First, for those who don’t know, A Wrinkle in Time follows prickly teen Meg Murry, her little brother, Charles Wallace, and their friend Calvin O’Keefe on a journey through space and time to: A.) rescue Meg and CW’s father from a seriously disturbed planet, and B.) fight a horrifying evil entity that is attempting to swallow the entire universe. It’s brilliant, and I advise you to go and read it immediately. Now on to my list:

1.) Diversity!

Specifically, what I’ll call real diversity. Not tokenism, not ticking off boxes to placate focus groups—the cast that DuVernay has assembled looks amazing. The Mrs. W’s are played by Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, and Mindy Kaling, three actors whose styles careers could not be more different, so I can’t wait to see how they each inhabit their roles. Gugu Mbatha-Raw looks like a perfect Dr. Murray to me, and I’m already terrified of Michael Peña.

2.) The Happy Medium!

Zach Galifianakis is going to be the gender-flipped Happy Medium and he looks perfect:

Zach Galifianakis as The Happy Medium

3.) Meg Murry!

I still remember how ecstatic I felt as I gradually realized that Meg was unpopular, uncool, and very, very spiky, so I’m glad that a new generation of girls will get to meet her in movie form! Plus, by making the Murrys an interracial family, DuVernay is inviting a whole new generation of people of color—especially nerdy girls—to see themselves in this story in a way that may have been harder before.

4.) #BestChris!

Look, I love Evans, Hemsworth, and Pratt, but there’s no contest here. Give me Rumpled Science Dad now, dammit!

5.) Become the Light!

Is it cheesy that they’ve seemingly added an uplifting catchphrase to this story?

Yes.

Do I care right now, with so much pain and division in the world?

Nope. Any reminder to fight darkness and bigotry is more than welcome, thank you.
