Captain Marvel has found its director—well, directors—and Marvel has kept its promise that the studio’s first female-led superhero film would have a female director… sort of. Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, whose credits range from the 2006 independent film Half Nelson (which kicked off Ryan Gosling’s career) to episodes of Showtime’s The Affair, will direct a screenplay written by Meg LeFauve (Inside Out) and Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy).

According to Variety, Boden and Fleck are just some of the multiple contenders with whom Marvel met; the shortlist that was more widely known included Jennifer Kent (The Babadook), Lorene Scafaria (Seeking a Friend at the End of the World), Niki Caro (Whale Rider), Lesli Linka Glatter (Homeland), Elizabeth Wood (White Girl), and Jennifer Yuh Nelson (Kung Fu Panda).

Furthermore, the studio emphasized the importance of the script being solid before making any sort of decision: “Execs met with the two numerous times and the pair impressed the studio time and time again with their vision for the heroine. Boden and Fleck have experience in both the TV and film world, which Marvel considers a strength.” Boden and Fleck’s affinity for character-driven stories clearly appealed to the studio, as Captain Marvel tracks Air Force pilot Carol Danvers’ (Brie Larson) transformation into the titular superhero after an accident fuses her human DNA with that of an alien and grants her superpowers. Interestingly, the duo were in the running to direct Guardians of the Galaxy back in 2012, so clearly they’ve stayed on Marvel’s radar for the past five years.
