MIT Brings New Iron Man Riri Williams to Life

On March 14 (a.k.a. Pi Day), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology releases its decision announcement for the class of 2021. Who better to usher in future MIT students than Riri Williams, class of 2020, a.k.a. the new Iron Man?

In the Marvel Comics universe, Riri has taken over the Iron Man mantle from Tony Stark after she impressed him by building her own Iron Man suit in her dorm at MIT, also his alma mater. She’s also the star of MIT’s admissions announcement video, a three-minute what-if imagining Riri putting aside her studies to focus on her suit, then flying around campus as her alter ego Ironheart. Not all heroes wear capes, the video says, but some carry tubes. In this case, it’s both test tubes and the tube containing all of MIT’s acceptances for the class of 2021.

MIT student Ayomide F. (’18) plays Riri in this stirring video:

The Pi Day videos are an annual tradition at MIT, with prior installments being no less geeky: According to The Boston Globe, the star of last year’s video was a “Decision Droid” who bore an uncanny resemblance to BB-8; 2015 saw drones dropping off acceptances.
