We’re excited to share the cover for April Daniels’ Sovereign, the sequel to her superhero adventure Dreadnought. In Dreadnought, readers were introduced to Danny Tozer, a trans teenager whose newfound superpowers thrust her into the limelight—and out of the closet. She may have won her first battle, but there are still plenty of challenges ahead…

Author April Daniels had this to say:

I think the cover of Sovereign kicks ass, and I hope that it communicates the somewhat larger scope of the second book. I’m also really glad with how much it hints at what’s inside without spoiling things. The mid-orbit fight scene, the flight from Antarctica, and even a subtle inference about the villain’s ultimate plans. Diversion did a great job with this cover and I’m really excited to share it with people.

Editor Eliza Kirby added:

Even before I’d read Sovereign, I was imagining Danny in flight on the cover. Flying makes her feel powerful and free, and every scene where she’s in the air is just a joy to read. In the scene depicted here, Danny’s flying into space on a superhero mission. I was so excited to see this section come to life, and it surpassed all of my expectations. The cover tells you everything you need to know about Danny—she’s strong and determined, in her element, ready to kick some ass and save the world all over again.

Sovereign publishes July 25th with Diversion Books. From the catalog copy:

Only nine months after her debut as the fourth superhero to fight under the name Dreadnought, Danny Tozer is already a scarred veteran. Protecting a city the size of New Port is a team-sized job and she’s doing it alone. Between her newfound celebrity and her demanding cape duties, Dreadnought is stretched thin, and it’s only going to get worse.

When she crosses a newly discovered supervillain, Dreadnought comes under attack from all quarters. From her troubled family life to her disintegrating friendship with Calamity, there’s no trick too dirty and no lever too cruel for this villain to use against her.

She might be hard to kill, but there’s more than one way to destroy a hero. Before the war is over, Dreadnought will be forced to confront parts of herself she never wanted to acknowledge.

And behind it all, an old enemy waits in the winds to unleash a plot that will scar the world forever.
