Paramount Pictures has released the first full-length trailer for Ghost in the Shell, its adaptation of the 1989 manga series of the same name.
As Engadget points out, visually the trailer resembles the 1995 animated film; the premise is also the same, as it follows cyborg Major (Scarlett Johansson), who begins questioning who she was before Hanka Robotics “saved” her and turned her into the crimefighting human/machine hybrid she is now. Here’s the official synopsis:
Based on the internationally-acclaimed sci-fi property, Ghost in the Shell follows Major, a special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9. Devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, Section 9 is faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka Robotics’ advancements in cyber technology.
In an interesting music choice, the trailer features a cover of Depeche Mode’s “Enjoy the Silence”:
Ghost in the Shell comes to theaters March 31, 2017.
