Comicosity’s Matt Santori-Griffith sat down with Greg Rucka, who is currently helming Wonder Woman along with artists Nicola Scott and Liam Sharp, and asked a big, oft-ducked question: is Wonder Woman queer?

And Rucka, rather than waffling, asked for Santori-Griffith’s definition of queerness and then answered, “Yes.”

This in itself would be a pretty big moment, but then Rucka dug into the nature of Diana’s heroism, and the way he and the artists are exploring utopia, and it became clear that a lot more thought has gone into this than a simple yes-or-no response.

Rucka dug into the mythology of Diana and her homeland of Themyscira, which he called “the best possible paradise” and discussed how a society that has no concept of most current gender structures would work. “…an Amazon doesn’t look at another Amazon and say, “You’re gay.” They don’t. The concept doesn’t exist. Now, are we saying Diana has been in love and had relationships with other women? As Nicola and I approach it, the answer is obviously yes. And it needs to be yes for a number of reasons”

But far more important to Rucka is the idea that past incarnations of Diana, in an attempt to follow an outdated romantic ideal, robbed her of much of her agency. Rucka wants it to be clear that his Wonder Woman doesn’t leave Themyscira because she loves Steve Trevor. Instead, Rucka puts her decision down to a far more heroic reason: “she wants to see the world and somebody must go and do this thing. And she has resolved it must be her to make this sacrifice.”

Rucka is also eager to use Themyscira and Amazonian society to explore how a utopia would work, in particular to honor the Marstons’ original vision for their comic.

The entire interview is a fascinating look into the world of Wonder Woman – you can read it at Comicosity!
