Brooklyn-based artist Olalekan Jeyifous has created an incredible vision of the future with an image series that portrays a new vision of Lagos, Nigeria in one possible evolution of its architecture and spaces. And what’s more, this project was inspired by two great authors–Nnedi Okorafor and China Miéville.

For this series, marked by buildings titled “Shanty Mega-structures,” Jeyifous combined futuristic-looking 3D models with photographs of Lagos to create a unique landscape for the future of the city. He told CityLab that two major inspirations behind the project were Nnedi Okorafor’s Binti and China Miéville’s The City & the City.

Jeyifous said that he meant for the series to highlight urban disparities and point out the ways in which slums often employ functional aspects that are oftn overlooked: “The project examines the ways in which the nature of impoverished spaces, which are not only highly self-organized but also deploy sustainability practices as a matter of necessity, can be applied to cities undergoing massive population growth.”
