Anne Sowards, Executive Editor at Berkley, has acquired The Great God’s War, a new high fantasy trilogy by New York Times and international bestselling author Stephen R. Donaldson. Sowards bought North American rights from Howard Morhaim at Howard Morhaim Literary Agency Inc. The first novel in the trilogy, Seventh Decimate, is scheduled to be published in hardcover in Fall 2017.

Set in a visionary new world in the midst of a magical war, the trilogy follows a prince who embarks on a desperate quest to find a sorcerous library that holds the knowledge required to save his kingdom. The prince’s journey is told in an intricate tale filled with Donaldson’s trademark ingenious worldbuilding, strong characterization, and riveting storytelling.

Editor Anne Sowards says, “I am so excited to publish Stephen Donaldson’s new series. I’ve been a fan of his writing for many years, and it is an honor to be a part of sharing his books with readers.”

Stephen R. Donaldson is the author of twenty-one fantasy, science fiction, and mystery novels and three collections of short fiction. His Chronicles of Thomas Covenant series propelled him to international bestseller status and became a landmark in modern fantasy. The Wall Street Journal said, “The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant will be seen as one of the self-defining works of the third millennium, our equivalent in scope and ambition of earlier epics and fantasies, from Virgil’s Aeneid to Tennyson’s Arthurian Idylls and Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings.”

Donaldson has received several awards for his work, including the John W. Campbell Award and the World Fantasy Award, and his celebrated novels have been taught in literature courses all over the world. He holds an honorary Doctor of Literature degree from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. Find out more about Stephen R. Donaldson at his website.
