Language is the first weapon drawn in a conflict. Linguist Louise Banks (Amy Adams) has her own words read back to her by physicist Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner) in the first teaser trailer for Arrival, based on Ted Chiang’s novella Story of Your Life. The teaser arrives on the heels of first-look images released yesterday, all of which circulate around the same big event: First contact with the alien heptapods as they land at various points on the globe.
The teaser premiered on the Today Show this morning, with the promise of another trailer coming August 16:
The teaser ends with Louise about to meet the aliens, same as us; that’s Forest Whitaker delivering that simple but ominous pronouncement of “They arrive.” Here’s hoping the full trailer will show us the heptapods in the flesh, as well as (more importantly) their languages. Arrival comes to theaters November 11.
