Marvel’s Jessica Jones and Daredevil Won’t Return to Netflix Until 2018

Disappointing news for Jessica Jones fans from Marvel and Netflix during the TCA (Television Critics Association) press tour this week: Season 2 won’t premiere until sometime in 2018. Ditto for season 3 of Daredevil, thanks to Marvel’s other superhero television series—plus the miniseries event for The Defenders—taking priority.

When asked whether Marvel might increase its number of series from two per year to five, Netflix’s chief content officer Ted Sarandos said, “I doubt that we could produce at the quality that they produce at that speed. But we’re gonna try to make them quicker so we can get less downtime between them.”

Luke Cage (starring Mike Colter) premieres September 30, while Iron Fist (starring Finn Jones) and The Defenders will premiere in 2017, according to Sarandos. Now, of course Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) and Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) will appear in The Defenders alongside Luke Cage and Iron Fist… and maybe also The Punisher (Jon Bernthal)? From Sarandos: “Uh… stay tuned.”

So, we will get to see Jessica sooner rather than later, but really we’re raring to find out what happens to Alias Investigations after the events of season 1. In May, showrunner Melissa Rosenberg teased some of season 2’s potential tone:

Jessica Jones, her journey is a very personal one, it’s very intimate. So, the guys coming in to take over the city, she doesn’t really care, she’s like “Take us down, I just need to pay my rent.” Whatever we do, it will be personal to her. It will be a personal story.

And shortly after season 1 premiered in late 2015, Ritter shared some thoughts about Jessica’s role in The Defenders:

Marvel and Netflix have proven they know what they’re doing. But it will be interesting to see how Jessica Jones fits in with those other guys because she doesn’t want to be a superhero. She doesn’t want anything to do with that. I have no idea how she’s going to be forced to team up with all of them.

[…] She has these powers and this innate goodness in her whether she likes it or not. So she’ll be a really valuable asset to the team. She has super strength. She can fly. Those things come in handy.

In the meantime, get hyped about the Luke Cage trailer!
