Now, I shouldn’t get your guys’ hopes up too much. This video from The CW is more of a sizzle reel than anything else, a bloody recap of all of the show’s brutal violence—in case you forgot about the spears through bodies, levers pulled leading to genocide, and poor Raven screaming as she gets cut into over and over. But at the end, there’s a brief tease of season 4, when the enemy isn’t Earthlings, but Earth itself.

As you’ll remember from the season 3 finale, even though A.L.I.E. got wiped out, she left a message for Clarke: Unstable nuclear plants all over the world are thisclose to collapsing, with the threat of unleashing radiation over the poor members of The 100 (or, the dozen or so left) and their nearest and dearest. To wit, the preview shows an ominous cloud crackling with lightning overtaking Polis:

Now, we’ve seen similar clouds from the Grounders, so it could be a ploy from one of the disparate groups, especially with Polis so weakened at the end of last season. Or, it could be the Earth reminding its inhabitants old and new that it’s still a dangerous place.

Executive producer Jason Rothenberg told Entertainment Weekly at SDCC:

If that were to happen, it probably wouldn’t be until the end of the season. The Earth strikes back in season 4. It’s an unbeatable foe. [The story] becomes not trying to stop it, because it’s not stoppable, it becomes how do we survive? There are not enough life boats. The Earth is the ark.

At the end of season 3, Clarke hadn’t yet told the other members of Skaikru (the Sky People, who came from the ark) about the nuclear threat. Rothenberg hinted that not everyone will take Clarke’s news well: “Some people are just done fighting and just want to party until the end of the world.”

Eliza Taylor, who plays Clarke, added:

It’s going to be really interesting to watch a group of people, humans, trying to survive again in a world that—this is an enemy that we can’t defeat. How do we move forward? In true Clarke fashion, that will be her trying to get everyone on board. There will be some very different reactions.

For more info on where other characters—including Raven, Octavia, and Indra—wind up in season 4, read EW‘s piece. Bad news, though not surprising: Alycia Debnam-Carey, currently starring on Fear the Walking Dead, will not return as Lexa. However, the flame will: “We realize the flame is a political artifact as well,” Rothenberg said. “Whoever holds the flame has power.”

The 100 season 4 is expected to premiere sometime in early 2017.
