We’ve got our first picture from season four of Sherlock, and some news from Steven Moffat regarding the future of the show….
The above picture looks an awful lot like Sherlock and Redbeard, his late childhood dog. Of course, it might be a different dog. Maybe John got him one? Mycroft?
According to E! Online, Steven Moffat thinks this series might be the last for the show: “I don’t know how long we can keep it going. I’m personally willing but I’m hardly the main draw. I would be moderately surprised if this was the last time we ever made this show. But it absolutely could be.”
This is primarily due to the busy schedules of the two main actors, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. The two have been landing themselves in substantial film roles of late, making scheduling a television show around them something of a chore.
Of course, Moffat knows that the show has the potential for renewal at any point in time; since Doyle’s stories about Holmes and Watson covered a large swath of their lives, it would be entirely reasonable to bring the crew back together and shoot a new series years from now, even decades. Says Moffat: “That’s why I think it’s unlikely that we’ve completely finished it. There would be nothing strange in stopping for a while. It could go on forever, coming back now and again.”
So no tears, Sherlock fans. In either case, this first glimpse is sweet as can be, and we can look forward to more information cropping up as the year continues.
