The Hollywood Reporter has news that will make Marvel’s standalone Black Panther film even better: Lupita Nyong’o is reportedly in negotiations to join the project! Just take a moment and imagine how perfect it would be to see Chadwick Boseman (one of our favorite parts of Captain America: Civil War) sharing the screen with Nyong’o.
Rumor has it she would play his love interest, though we imagine there would be more to the character than that if Disney and Marvel are courting Nyong’o, and since reports describe her as starring opposite T’Challa. A contingent of fans would love to see Nyong’o as Storm (since she and Black Panther were married in the comics), but that seems unlikely. As Vulture points out, Nyong’o could play T’Challa’s American love interest Monica Lynne, or a member of the Black Panther’s all-female bodyguard team the Dora Milaje. After all, we may have already met a member of the Dora Milaje in T’Challa’s “Security Chief” from Civil War, who nearly stole the whole movie in her two seconds of screentime.
Ryan Coogler, writer-director of Creed and Fruitvale Station, will be helming Black Panther in both roles. Black Panther comes to theaters February 2, 2018.
