Before Guardians of the Galaxy came out, the Internet was all abuzz trying to figure out Nathan Fillion’s mysterious cameo. Many people watched the movie and completely missed his sly turn as a blue-skinned inmate. For the sequel, James Gunn and co. are making sure that Fillion is much more noticeable. In fact, he’s playing Tony Stark.
No, he didn’t steal the role from Robert Downey, Jr. According to some set photos collected in an Imgur album, Fillion will play an actor named Simon Williams, who has starred in a number of rom-coms, Adam Sandler-esque comedies, and a Tony Stark biopic.
It looks as if Guardians Vol. 2 will have at least one sequence on Earth during the present day, at a Simon Williams film festival. It’s unclear if the extent of the cameo is the amusing array of movie posters (we “witch” we could watch Haxan 2), or if Fillion will actually appear in the flesh.
Because as io9 points out, Simon Williams has another alter ego: Wonder Man. This superhero eventually left crimefighting for Hollywood, but perhaps he’ll come out of retirement just in time for Avengers: Infinity War Parts 1 and/or 2. Or maybe it’s just a cheeky in-joke for Fillion.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 comes to our reality’s theaters May 5, 2017.
