The Cake Was Never a Lie!

April Fool’s 2016 was an uneven affair: ThinkGeek’s charming Star Trek White Noise Machine carried a price tag that must be a (bad) joke, while Gmail’s Mic Drop prank actually endangered many jobs. But there was one winner, from an unlikely outlet: Serious Eats got wonderfully nerdy and made an attempt at the infamous Portal cake! While they’re by no means the first to try to tackle GLaDOS’ dangerous recipe, Serious Eats lived up to its reputation (“hard-core food science, trailblazing techniques”) and name by giving real consideration to substitutes for ingredients such as “fish-shaped ethyl benzene” and “sediment-shaped sediment.” They were even nice enough to include the recipe so that you can… oh, nevermind.
