After an extensive casting search, Steven Spielberg has found the missing key for his adaptation of Ernest Cline’s novel Ready Player One: Deadline reports that Tye Sheridan has signed on to play Wade Watts (a.k.a. Parzival), the unlikely protagonist with the very superhero-sounding name. Sheridan is an up-and-comer who you’ll recognize as a young Scott Summers (a.k.a. Cyclops) in the forthcoming X-Men: Apocalypse.
If you haven’t read Cline’s cult favorite novel, it’s a mix of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory if Willy Wonka were a reclusive programmer and the chocolate factory were an online community/role-playing game called the OASIS. When James Halliday dies in 2039, he leaves behind clues to his legacy in the form of Easter eggs, mostly made up of 1980s and/or video game references. Gunters, or egg hunters, devote their lives to deciphering clues in the OASIS, all for the chance to win Halliday’s billion-dollar fortune.
This announcement rounds out the main cast: Olivia Cooke (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, Bates Motel) will play Art3mis, a gunter competing with Parzival; the other gunters have not yet been cast. Ben Mendelsohn will play Nolan Sorrento, working with Innovative Online Industries (IOI) to gain control of the OASIS and monetize Halliday’s utopia. No release date for Ready Player One has yet been set.
