Time After Time Pilot Casts Freddie Stroma as H.G. Wells

A few weeks after being picked up by ABC, Kevin Williamson’s upcoming time travel television series Time After Time has cast its lead: Freddie Stroma will play H.G. Wells, chasing Jack the Ripper through time, in a role originated by Malcolm McDowell in the 1979 movie adaptation of Karl Alexander’s novel.

While Stroma is more well-known for mainstream movies like Pitch Perfect and Lifetime’s wonderfully cynical drama UnREAL, he’s started making more moves into the SFF sphere. He played Cormac McLaggen in the last three Harry Potter movies, and this season he’ll appear on Game of Thrones as Dickon Tarly. That said, his ability to bring a surprising amount of heart to his reality-TV bachelor role on UnREAL will likely aid him on Williamson’s pilot; if he brought depth to a stock character, I’m curious to see how he’ll approach H.G. Wells. It’ll be interesting if the writers go for a more dashing time-traveler, as opposed to McDowell’s more nebbish take on the character:

Wonder who they’ll cast as Jack…
