“Intersections” Celebrates the Meeting of Light and Shadow

Pakistani-American artist Anila Quayyum Agha created this gorgeous installation in 2013. Called “Intersections”, it uses a single light bulb to illuminate an intricately carved wood block, which mimics the patterns of a mosque in Alhambra. By projecting the light through the comparatively small body of the block, the artist has transformed the entire room into a sacred space that welcomes everyone. As the patterns of light fall on viewers’ skin, they themselves are made part of the space, and find themselves experiencing Intersections rather than simply viewing it.
