Last year Ellen Klages won the World Fantasy Award for Best Novella with her story Wakulla Springs (jointly written with Andy Duncan, published here at Tor.com), so when Ellen contacted commissioning editor Jonathan Strahan with an idea for another great story for us, we all sat up and listened.

Passing Strange is an intriguing period fantasy with SF overtones, set in 1940’s San Francisco, and will be published in ebook, print and audio editions in the fall of 2016.

Ellen said, “I’m so happy to be part of Tor’s new novella program. Although many of my stories are set in the past, it’s a thrill to be part of the future of fantastic publishing.”

Jonathan Strahan, who acquired Passing Strange for Tor.com, had this to say:

“Ellen Klages is a remarkable writer with an eye for the strange and quirky in everyday life who takes the quotidian details she sees and adds a touch of wonder and magic to create deeply moving stories that are infused with a rare warmth and wisdom. I love Ellen’s work and am delighted to be able to help bring this exciting new story to Tor.com and to readers everywhere.”

Ellen Klages’ novelette “Basement Magic” won the 2005 Nebula Award, and her novella “Wakulla Springs” (written with Andy Duncan) won the 2014 World Fantasy Award. You can read another of her recent stories, “Amicae Aeternum” on Tor.com, or thrill to the harrowing story of The Scary Ham.
