Rumor has it that Ender’s Game star Asa Butterfield is the frontrunner to play Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s version of Spider-Man. While a recent shortlist included Butterfield alongside Timothee Chalamet (Interstellar) and Nat Wolff (The Fault in Our Stars), Latino-Review reports that Butterfield is in negotiations with Marvel, with an official announcement to follow

The general assumption is that Spider-Man will have a cameo in Captain America: Civil War, which has already started shooting—hence the need to cast a Peter Parker ASAP. Then will come the Spider-Man solo movie, which will take Peter back to high school.

Of course, this is not yet set in stone. There’s been no word from Marvel, and The Hollywood Reporter‘s Borys Kit has cautioned against assuming that it’s a done deal.

Butterfield is a talented actor with an impressive career trajectory: Since his strong first impression as Mordred on Merlin, he’s made films like Hugo and Ender’s Game shine. He’s also currently starring in Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiars, based on Ransom Riggs’ novel. If he can command virtual-reality fleets and explore peculiar mysteries, he would certainly be up for great power and great responsibilities.
