Watch Your Favorite SFF Authors Write Stories in Real-Time During the #TwitterFiction Festival

Since 2012, the #TwitterFiction Festival has celebrated the art of storytelling by having authors and readers write stories entirely over Twitter—crowdsourcing ideas, crafting narratives, embedding media, and even creating multiple character handles. Stories ranged from noir to Greek myth.

As of 2014, thanks to a partnership between the Association of American Publishers and Penguin Random House, the #TwitterFiction Festival is an industry-wide event, attracting even more authors to share their stories. This year’s festival runs May 11-15, with sci-fi and fantasy writers including Margaret Atwood and Chuck Wendig getting in on the fun.

Here’s the full schedule of authors and their stories—and here are the ones we’ll be looking forward to reading:

  • Margaret Atwood will repurpose words drawn from the trailer copy for plane movies into Film Previews on a Plane: the Helpful Summaries.
  • Lauren Beukes will take your “Litmash” suggestions (e.g., “cold war fairytale”) and write a story in 45 minutes.
  • Beth Cato will delve into the fantastical and futuristic in poems and tweet-sized stories.
  • Ian Doescher will compose love poems—couplets, specifically—from one Star Wars character to another, in iambic pentameter.
  • Lemony Snicket has amnesia and needs your help.
  • Maggie Stiefvater, speaking through a god and goddess, debates whether to end the world.
  • Chuck Wendig will tackle technology, privacy, and vulnerability in his story about a shadowy figure that emerges from social media—its name is Typhon, and it wants to talk to you.

There will also be an in-person event in New York City on May 13, in which authors including Myke Cole and Gayle Forman will create Twitter fiction onstage with help from the audience. Those stories will be brought to life through live illustrations by Michael Arthur.

From May 11-15, you can follow along with @TWFictionFest, and use the hashtag #TwitterFiction to join the conversation!
