Disney and Lucasfilm have announced the first Star Wars standalone film at their annual shareholders meeting. Rogue One will star The Theory of Everything’s Felicity Jones as—we’re assuming—the first prominent lady member of Rogue Squadron.
Jones is most likely not playing Jaina Solo, as Daisy Ridley is expected to be the Solo child in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. But with Rogue One likely taking place around the same time as The Force Awakens, maybe Jones’ character is buddies with Rey.
Chris Weitz (The Golden Compass, Cinderella) wrote the screenplay for Rogue One, with Gareth Edwards directing. No plot details have been released, but we do know it will come to theaters December 16, 2016.
Lucasfilm and Disney also confirmed that Rian Johnson will write and direct Star Wars Episode VIII, which will be released May 26, 2017.
