The first trailer is out for Crimson Peak, Guillermo del Toro’s first stab at Gothic horror. He decided to do the film, he explained at SDCC, because “I wanted to make a movie that can blend two sides of my personality.” We’re not sure which two sides are represented in this trailer—which includes creepy co-dependent siblings, a living house, a fair amount of sex, and bloodily-murdered ghosts—but we like what we see.

Mia Wasikowska plays a virginal little thing who gets swept up by a version of Tom Hiddleston who looks like a sweeter Loki. But as she moves in to his childhood home, she must become accustomed to his unsettling sister (Jessica Chastain) and, oh, the grisly ghosts reenacting their deaths all throughout the house. Chastain’s character is clearly one to watch, as she spies on her brother consummating his love and creepily croons lines like “This is your home now.”

Charlie Hunnam wants to save Mia, but he’s going to have to fight a bloodthirsty house, its rather unstable inhabitants, and whatever the crimson peak of the title is. There are a lot of fascinating personal dynamics going on here, and it will be interesting to see how bloodily they play out:

And here’s the synopsis:

In the aftermath of a family tragedy, an aspiring author is torn between love for her childhood friend and the temptation of a mysterious outsider. Trying to escape the ghosts of her past, she is swept away to a house that breathes, bleeds… and remembers.

Crimson Peak comes to theaters October 16.
