Disney’s Sea Voyage Film Moana Will Come to Theaters in 2016

The last we had heard of Disney’s forthcoming CG-animated film Moana, it was set to be released in 2018. However, Disney has just announced (via Entertainment Weekly) that Moana will be sailing into theaters in 2016, two years early. The studio has also released a more detailed synopsis about the Polynesian heroine and her journey, including the gods and sea creatures she encounters along the way.

Meet Moana:

The film tells the story of Moana, a spirited teenager on an impossible mission to fulfill her ancestors’ quest. It’s set in the ancient South Pacific world of Oceania, and Moana, a born navigator, sets sail in search of a fabled island. During her incredible journey, she teams up with her hero, the legendary demi-god Maui, to traverse the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous sea creatures, breathtaking underworlds and ancient folklore.

Since the first piece of Moana concept art hit the web in 2013, the character has inspired her own fandom on Tumblr, who present their varying interpretations of what the young voyager looks like.

Also in the announcement, John Musker, co-director of the movie with Ron Clements (both worked on Aladdin and The Little Mermaid), gave some more information on the character:

Moana is indomitable, passionate and a dreamer with a unique connection to the ocean itself. She’s the kind of character we all root for, and we can’t wait to introduce her to audiences.

Only two years to wait, now.
