At the Legend of Korra panel at NYCC, fans got a preview of an upcoming episode from the final season: “Korra Alone.” We’ve got some sneaky (very vague) highlights, and some behind the scenes fun from the voice actors.
Here are a couple things you can look forward to for the new episode:
- As the title would indicate, this episode focuses on Korra’s time recovering from her injuries and away from her family and friends.
- Korra’s battle through physical therapy and handling PTSD are explored thoroughly.
- The spirit world is featured.
- There is a hilarious reference to Aang in the episode.
- Korra meets an old friend…
Janet Varney, P. J. Byrne, and David Faustino (voices of Korra, Bolin, and Mako), prepared a hilarious “behind the scenes” video that shows them preparing for a day in the recording booth. Highlights included the trio walking slow-mo into booth (while Byrne took off his shirt), Faustino cleaning the studio so Nickelodeon will hire him again, Byrne eating a bowl of ramen before beginning, and Varney reading The Giving Tree surrounded by Korra stuffed animals to prepare for a crying scene.
Showrunners Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko brought along a recording of the trios first run-through together, the point at which they realized they had found the right crew. It was very interesting to hear all the actors speaking in the same room, which does change the dynamic of voice acting.
We got a look at some designs for Book 4, particularly the development of Kuvira, and the genesis of her look in animation. A lot of the sketches will end up in the Legend of Korra art book, which should be coming out soon.
The actors said goodbye to the fans, thanking them for their dedication, and looking back on the process. Everyone is clearly looking forward to whatever DiMartino and Konietzko come up with next. Of course, there may be reunions in the future, but this was a lovely way to bid the show goodbye.
