So far all we know about Star Trek 3 is that the crew of the Enterprise is going into DEEP SPACE. But you know who they might find? William Shatner, playing Captain James T. Kirk for the first time in canon since 1991’s Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.

According to Badass Digest, Roberto Orci’s got a cameo in mind for Shatner—one that will somehow reunite him and Spock Prime (Leonard Nimoy). And unlike the first time they tried to get Shatner in the new Trek movies, this scene is “plot-driven and integral enough” to avoid getting cut.

For the Trek reboot in 2009, J.J. Abrams had intended for Shatner to appear in a scene near the end. When Zachary Quinto’s Spock still expresses skepticism that he and Chris Pine-edition Kirk actually become friends, Spock Prime gives him a pendant with a holographic message of Kirk Prime singing “Happy Birthday” to him. Abrams ultimately cut the scene, calling it “pandering” to the fans and reportedly pissing off Shatner.

But now, could Shatner be willing to sign on for a meatier cameo? Could Kirk and Spock be reunited in a non-cheesy way?

Star Trek 3 comes out sometime in 2016, so we’ve got plenty of time to speculate on how Kirk could be integral to the plot! Maybe the Nexus swung back after he died on Veridian III and deposited him in nu-Trek. We don’t know. We just hate how he died and want that fixed.
