Remember that time we glimpsed the Deadpool test footage and it was everything we wanted from a Deadpool movie? The Internet’s overwhelmingly positive reaction has translated to action: Variety reports that Fox and Marvel have slotted a Deadpool movie for February 12, 2016!
Now, to make this Deadpool more true to the comics than Ryan Reynolds’ version from X-Men Origins: Wolverine, we’re going to need a few things to happen. For one, he has to be super meta. To that end, director Tim Miller worked with Zombieland and G.I. Joe: Retaliation screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick on a new draft of the script.
The other thing is getting Reynolds. Sure, another actor could handle the Merc with a Mouth, but he already has the sass down. (Also, we want to see him make up for Green Lantern.) So far he hasn’t officially signed on to play Deadpool, but it would behoove him to do so. In a recent interview, he said that it was “unfortunate” that the footage was leaked, while still acknowledging how it spurred everything on:
The movie has been in a state of limbo for a while. There was such an overpowering reaction to the footage, you sort of feel like, “Oh, so we weren’t crazy for our reasons for loving this character, for loving this role.” It’s interesting to see the power of the Internet. It’s awe-inspiring, actually.
Oh, you guys are crazy, but the best kind of crazy.
In related news, Fox has pushed Fantastic Four back to August 7, 2015. (That replaces Assassin’s Creed, which currently has no release date.) X-Men: Apocalypse remains at May 27, 2016, a few months after Deadpool.
One wonders if we’ll see a Wolverine cameo in Deadpool now…
