Dan Aykroyd Wants to Model the Ghostbusters Franchise On the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Despite the fact that we haven’t even cast the rumored female Ghostbusters reboot, Dan Aykroyd is projecting a decade into the future of the ghosthunting franchise. And what’s his model for churning out single-focus movies while still constructing a cohesive Ghostbusters universe? Why, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, of course!

Promoting his brand of Crystal Head vodka (yep) in London, Aykroyd told The Hollywood Reporter that he, Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman, and the rest of the producers are looking super-big picture:

It’s beyond just another sequel, a prequel, another TV show. I’m thinking what does the whole brand mean to Sony? What does Pixar and Star Wars mean to Disney? What does Marvel mean to Fox?

(Maybe he meant what does Marvel mean to Disney?) Aykroyd emphasized that the focus shouldn’t be on a specific spinoff, but on and entire ghostbusting universe. A universe that would need to be populated by multiple, dynamic shows that are canon (unlike the ’90s cartoons The Real Ghostbusters and Extreme Ghostbusters, which deviated plenty from the movies):

…not just another movie or another TV show, but what’s the totality of it? The whole mythology from the beginning of their lives, the end of their lives. Ghostbusters at nine years old, Ghostbusters in high school.

Or, you know, female Ghostbusters. Think Ghostbusters could live on if it embraces its potential as a Marvel-esque franchise? We’re putting together our pitch for Ghostbusters Babies right now.
