The latest batch of posters for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1 have the rebels of District 13 looking more like members of the Expendables movies than a propaganda camera crew. Which is to say, super badass, though we would’ve liked to see some camera equipment along with the rifles and crossbows.

But the most interesting thing to note about the Mockingjay posters so far is that none of them have featured Katniss Everdeen. Sure, she’s in the trailer, but the first round of teasers starred Peeta and Johanna; and the recent print ads focused on the leaders of District 13, like President Coin and Gale. Our Mockingjay is nowhere to be seen, and we think they planned it that way.

When the Catching Fire promotion was ramping up early last year, our first official image was of Katniss and Peeta blankly happily engaged, courtesy of the Capitol. But as anyone who saw the movie knows, so much happened without Katniss’ knowledge, with her only learning about the plot to protect her in the final minutes.

The whole point of Mockingjay, in comparison, is for the PTSD-suffering Katniss to stay out of the action, hardly knowing what the rebels are doing. That is, until she negotiates immunity for her fellow victors by starring in District 13’s propaganda ads, or propos. And that’s where Cressida (Natalie Dormer) and company come in:

We were mostly kidding about the Expendables thing. The poses against the mockingjay wings look rather cool. We’re also really digging Cressida’s scalp tattoo.

Boggs!

Then you’ve got brothers Castor and Pollux…

In the book, Pollux is an Avox, but it’s unclear if the movie will uphold this detail. While the past two films have featured characters who are clearly Avoxes (Avoces?), there was never any explanation nor mention of tongues getting cut out.

Messalla is Cressida’s assistant, who helps film the propos and gets roped into the later action.

And, of course, dear Gale.

Now that we’ve met the prop crew, it seems only fitting that the next poster reveal star Katniss as the Mockingjay. Keeping Jennifer Lawrence out of most of the advertising so far is a shrewd move, because it makes the fans just as anxious as the Panem citizens to see their star.

In the meantime, Mockingjay viral marketing is everywhere right now. Fansite Jabberjays.net figured out how to hack into District 13’s files to unlock Cressida’s intel on the Capitol. (Nerd alert: The screenshot shows her location as District 8, which is where Katniss first joins the actual rebellion, though that fight ends in a tragic bombing.) MTV News also noticed that the Capitol’s “District Pride” billboards are all sporting freshly-painted mockingjay symbols.

Throw up those three-fingered salutes!
