Welcome back to The Pop Quiz at the End of the Universe, a recurring series here on Tor.com featuring some of our favorite science fiction and fantasy authors, artists, and others!
Today we’re joined by Sarah J. Maas, the New York Times bestselling author of the Throne of Glass series, including Throne of Glass, Crown of Midnight, and five novellas. The third book in the series, Heir of Fire, is available September 2nd from Bloomsbury. A New York native, Sarah currently lives in Southern California with her husband and dog.
Sarah’s patronus suggests that she is a very clever girl indeed…
If you could choose your own personal theme music to play every time you enter a room, what would you pick?
This is literally the hardest question of all time, because I actually have a playlist dedicated to this exact thing (titled “BAMF Entrance Jams”) that I listen to whenever I need a boost of swag. But if forced to choose… I’d say “Bad Girls” by M.I.A.
Battle to the death, which weapon do you choose: A) Phaser, B) Lightsaber, or C) Wand?
Lightsaber. You can’t get any more epic than a lightsaber battle. (Confession: It’s my dream to some day own one of those super-fancy replicas and display it on my mantel.)
If you had to choose one band or artist to provide the official soundtrack to your new book, who would it be?
Okay, this also tied for hardest question of all-time, since music plays such a huge role in inspiring and shaping my Throne of Glass books (actually, all my books!). James Horner, James Newton Howard, John Williams, Hans Zimmer, Michael Giacchino, or Ramin Djawadi would all be a dream come true for a Throne of Glass soundtrack. With original songs by Woodkid (“Run Boy Run” is one of the songs that played a huge role in inspiring Heir of Fire.)
What would your Patronus/familiar be?
Velociraptor. Hands down. (Talons down?)
If you were secretly going to write fanfic (or, even better, slashfic) about any two characters, who would they be?
Um, it’d be self-insert Pacific Rim and Edge of Tomorrow crossover fanfic, starring my best friend, fellow YA author, Susan Dennard, and me. We’ve already plotted most of it: we’re the most badass jaeger co-pilots in the world, and we team up with Rita Vrataski (and her jaeger, the Full Metal Bitch) to fight the kaiju and Mimics. …We’ve literally spent hours on the phone discussing all the (ridiculous) details, and who our fictional boyfriends would be (*cough*HenryCavill*cough*).
