With less than a week to go til the Doctor Who season 8 premiere (read our spoiler-free review of “Deep Breath”), outlets are reporting that this may be the last season for Clara Oswald. Could we be losing Jenna Coleman for Christmas?

According to a source at the Daily Mirror, Coleman came to the mutual decision with showrunner Steven Moffat that it would soon be time for Clara to leave the TARDIS. An anonymous source said, “The conversations about Jenna’s exit have started, and a plan is in place which is being ironed out.”

Although Coleman joined the show relatively recently, considering the gaps between seasons (as Hypable points out), she’s been by both Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi’s sides for quite a while. She’s also been on viewers’ minds since her first appearance as Oswin Oswald. The source acknowledged all this while looking forward:

By the time she leaves she will be one of the longest-standing companions ever. She has been absolutely brilliant in the role, but everyone agrees it is a part that should change after a period.

It definitely makes sense, especially after a recent interview with Capaldi that guaranteed that there would be no Doctor/companion love affair in this season. If this rumor is true, then we’ll get to see several episodes of Clara adjusting to this new, darker Doctor, before deciding to move on.

The source also hinted that this could all come to a head at the end of the year:

It’s important to keep the series moving and fast-paced, and the time is just starting to feel right and the feeling is that it could be a perfect Christmas storyline.

Which would be a fitting bookend to Clara’s tenure on the show, considering her first official companion appearance was in the 2012 Christmas special.

Interestingly, this news comes around the same time that Coleman gave an interview to The Independent (on the season 8 press tour) where she described the companion gig as “so consuming” but also “one of those jobs that will only happen once.”
