Sean Bean Kicked Around Ned Stark’s Head Like a Football and Other Highlights From His Reddit AMA

One does not simply use Reddit’s AMA (Ask Me Anything) subreddit strictly for self-promotion, and yet so many celebrities attempt to do so. That’s why it’s especially wonderful to see a star who truly delights in his/her experience on the site. Take Sean Bean’s AMA, which was peppered with so many answers that to try and pick out the highlights was to nearly reproduce the entire conversation.

But we did! Pick out the best parts, that is. Read on for the Legends star’s candid thoughts on Jon Snow’s real parentage, his propensity for dying, his love for baked beans, getting confused with Mr. Bean, and how his fans should approach him in public (“On their knees!!!!!”).

Oh, and we loved how Bean got the hang of Reddit enough to respond to himself every once in a while. Too great. Here are the highlights:

  • He signed on to play Game of Thrones’ Ned Stark despite knowing that he would die at the end of season 1, “because it was such a good part.”
  • While he found his severed head “a bit strange and creepy,” mostly he coped by kicking it around like a football on-set.
  • Bean has hinted, in other interviews, at the mystery of Jon Snow’s parentage. When asked for another cryptic hint, he responded:

I don’t know?! I mean, how am I supposed to know? Does anybody know? I don’t think he’s mine.

  • When asked why he hadn’t taught Jon Snow anything, his answer was simply, “HAHAHAHAHA! Because he’s not mine!”
  • He’d rather fight one Mountain-sized Tyrion Lannister than 100 Tyrion-sized Mountains.
  • The greatest celebrity answer to a two-pronged AMA question:

1. Would you rather apologize to Frodo or actually have that conversation with Jon Snow?

2. Do you plan to work your way into the new Star Wars trilogy so that you can die in the first installment?

1) I did apologize to Frodo, didn’t I? Or I told somebody to tell him I was sorry. And fuck Jon Snow.

2) That’s a terrible question! I want to stay alive, and thrive!

  • If he could play any superhero, he’d be Thor.
  • Acting in the upcoming Dragonriders of Pern movies “would be good fun” because he’s never gotten to ride a dragon before.
  • He’s collected a number of swords from his various film and TV projects, his favorite being an original cavalry sword from the late 19th century.
  • He still bumps into Viggo Mortensen and Orlando Bloom occasionally.
  • When asked if he admits that one can simply walk into Mordor: “Did they just sort of walk in? It’s ’cause they’re so small.”
  • He has the best “hanging out with Nicolas Cage” story from the set of National Treasure:

There was one where I went back to Nic Cage’s house, and we’d had a few drinks, we were playing pool and he accidentally knocked over his prehistoric cave bear skull and smashed it. And he was really upset about it, and the next day went and buried it in a field.

Contrary to Redditors’ beliefs, Sean Bean did not die by the end of the AMA.
