What’s to Come From Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Agent Carter, and Marvel TV Next Year?

The cast and crew of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the forthcoming Agent Carter took to the stage at San Diego Comic Con on Friday to reveal what’s next for my living captors Coulson’s plucky crew. Both shows are slated to fill the airwaves starting this fall, all the way up to the debut of Avengers: Age of Ultron. Will there be any crossover?

The initial Agent Carter panel included Marvel TV head Jeph Loeb, Agent Carter show runners Tara Butters and Michele Fazekas, pilot script writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, Marvel Studios co-president and Agent Carter pilot ep director Louis D’Esposito, and Agent Carter herself Hayley Atwell. The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. cast and crew followed afterwards.

  • Jeph Loeb says that the lesson from AoS’ first year was “don’t trust anyone.” It’s a weird note to start on. Does he mean the show’s staff…?
  • Oh wait, Jeph Loeb just revealed that he’s Hydra. #ItsAllConnected
  • Agent Carter takes place in 1946. We’ll see the cost of the war and the loss of Cap “psychologically and emotionally” for Peggy.
  • A teaser video showed a newspaper with the headline “Stark Industries Under Investigation. Howard Stark – A Traitor?” So it seems like Peggy and Howard are going to be set against each other, most likely unwillingly.
  • “Zodiac” was a keyword that popped up during the teaser reel as well. Looks like the SSR (the pre-S.H.I.E.L.D. outfit that Peggy belongs to) will face up against that criminal syndicate.
  • There is, however, no confirmation that Dominic Cooper, who played Howard Stark in Captain America: The First Avenger, has joined the series. Jeph Loeb says they’d love to have him.
  • The Russo Bros., who directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier, are directing episodes 2 and 3.
  • Joe Johnson, the director of the first Cap film, “wants” to direct episode 4.
  • Shooting on the series has not yet begun.
  • We’ll see Peggy’s early military training in the first two episodes.
  • There will be other strong female characters in the show but Agent Carter is definitely about Peggy staking a claim as a strong female character in a male-dominated social structure.
  • Hayley Atwell hopes she’ll be a role model for young girls, as they see her kicking butt onscreen.

The cast and crew of Agent Carter hustled off stage at that point to make room for the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. roustabouts, including show runners Jeffrey Bell, Maurissa Tancharoen, and Jed Whedon, along with cast Ming-Na Wen (Agent May), Elizabeth Henstridge (Agent Simmons), Iain De Caestecker (Agent Fitz), Brett Dalton (Agent SquatThrust, who’s teasing the audience by wearing a Hydra shirt), Chloe Bennet (Skye), and Clark Gregg (Agent “Phil” Coulson).

  • HYDRA WARD HUGGED HYDRA LOEB. I HAVE NEVER KNOWN SUCH RAGE.
  • Seriously, look at this evil sumbitch.
  • Fitz is “completely heartbroken” by Ward’s betrayal and would “rather not speak about it further” this evening thank you.
  • May is really happy to have been able to respond in a way that utilized Ward’s foot, however. (For those unfamiliar, she nailgunned his foot to the floor in the season finale and then kicked the crap out of him.)
  • Simmons thinks the role is making her smarter.
  • Skye is bummed she only got be S.H.I.E.L.D. for one day before it all blew up.
  • Skye still thinks her and Ward will get together but until Ward shapes up his attitude she’s pulling for Skye/Simmons. “#Skimmons”
  • Ward was filming a fight scene on a Friday when the executive producers gathered and told him they wanted to see him. He took a long time to get to their office because he thought Ward was going to be killed off. Instead, they told him he was Hydra.
  • His reaction that day:

  • Maurissa Tancharoen thinks Ward deliberately “turned the sexy up” on his acting as a result of the secret.
  • Clark Gregg says he’s slowly becoming completely like Coulson.
  • NEW CAST ANNOUNCEMENTS!
  • Lucy Lawless is playing “Isabel Hartley, a longtime agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. who always has a knife by her side.”
  • Nick Blood is playing “Lance Hunter. He’s not a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, he’s a mercenary [who used to work for British organization S.T.R.I.K.E. in the comics]” Coulson is actively recruiting in season 2, and will be dealing with the remnants of Hydra at the same time.
  • Hahahaha, sorry. “Lance Hunter.” Next you’ll tell me “Wolf Blitzer” is a real name, too.
  • Season 2’s “Big Bad” is Daniel Whitehall, known as Kraken in the comic Secret Warriors, and will be played by Reed Diamond.
  • For those unfamiliar with Kraken, he’s an almost mythological head of Hydra and is very possibly the drippy guy we saw at the very end of season 1. i.e. There’s a possibility he’s Skye’s dad.
  • Oh man, itty bitty Coulson cosplay.

  • The folks in the ballroom are getting to see season 1 bloopers now.
  • Fitz and Simmons don’t want Ward to rejoin the team! Skye also offers a no, but begrudgingly. She’s willing to overlook his evil as long his abs stay in view.
  • Coulson would like to see Ward make a peace offering to the team, perhaps in the form of a tiny monkey bought for Fitz.
  • Chloe Bennet knows as much about Skye’s origins as the audience does.
  • Aw, the show runners just shot down Deadpool ever appearing.
  • ONE LAST BOMBSHELL. A season 2 preview reel mentions Bobbi Morse, also known as Mockingbird, also eventually known as the superhero Hawkeye marries!

Here’s the preview reel:

And here’s the blooper reel!

That was all from the Marvel TV panel. Weird that we didn’t hear about any of the Netflix offerings slated for 2015 but maybe those projects aren’t far enough along yet. (They’ve only really cast Daredevil so far.)
