Cheekboned Sherlock spirit vise Benedict Cumberbatch is at San Diego Comic Con this year to promote Penguins of Madagascar, the third Hobbit movie, and…Doctor Strange?

At least, that’s the rumor, and SDCC goers have wasted no time asking him flat out whether he’s going to be announced as Stephen Strange during Marvel’s Phase 3 panel on Saturday.

MTV News asked him flat out, before he’d even begun doing anything at SDCC and Cumberbatch said:

As far as I’m aware, even if that was the case, it couldn’t work out because I’m doing a little play called Hamlet in London,” he said. “So I don’t think I could even if that was in the cards. It sounds like a fantastic project. It’s a shame if I miss out, but who knows?

That’s not a nooooo, Sherlock! Con-goers took the sort-of-denial and ran with it, asking him at his subsequent Madagascar panel what superhero he’d love to play, if he could.

Long pause.

Nurse Normal? Wait for it. Wait for it. Let the penny drop. … OK, that’s a joke about Doctor Strange. Batman, I suppose?

(You meant Night Nurse, Cumberbuddy, but we’ll let it slide, seeing as how you’re best friends with penguins and all.)

Cumberbatch has been tied to basically any marquee franchise that comes around, though, so it’s quite possible that he really isn’t showing up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The truth shall out on Saturday, we suppose!
