Reactor

It’s always a delight to see Lucy Lawless appear on different genre shows after Xena: Warrior Princess. She pissed us off in all the best ways as D’Anna on Battlestar Galactica; she’s scarily conniving on Spartacus; she tamed the mighty Ron Swanson on Parks & Recreation; and now, she’s joining the cast of ABC and Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for its second season.

But who will she play?

TV Guide broke the news, adding the caveat that there’s been no information released about Lawless’ character. TV Line has the best guess: Apparently ABC has been looking to fill the role of S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Mary Maloney, highly-skilled and able to “command any room” as well as boasting “effortless sex appeal.” Maloney has no basis in the existing comics and would appear to be part of a new team of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents that may or may not be in opposition to Coulson’s crew. SciFi4Me has an unconfirmed possible character list:

1) Graham Evans – 50s, Caucasian. Worldly with meticulous nature. His reserved and polite manner make his actions all the more chilling, and often deadly

2) Mary Maloney – 30s, Caucasian. Blonde, beautiful, with an effortless sex appeal. A highly-skilled agent who can command any room. She’s seen it all, but that always comes with a price…

3) Jack Miller – 30s, any ethnicity. A no-nonsense mechanic with a good sense of humor, who can build or fix just about anything. Built like a linebacker, he’s a gentle giant until he decides to kick your ass

4) Howard Bell – 40s, Caucasian. A father figure. Able to be genuinely warm and engaging, but he will protect his family with violent intensity

5) Bo Platt – 40s, A formidable mercenary. Physical and fit like an MMA fighter. Head shaved bald

6) Toshiro – 40s, Indian Confident but a little bit officious, he is the right hand man who’s not afraid to do the dirty work

7) Idaho – 30s, any ethnicity, wiry. Sharp-witted, good with weapons

ScreenRant points out that, because season 1 ended on a mysterious note with the (inhuman?) identity of Skye’s father, Lawless could be playing her mom. Then again, she could also be a scientist involved in the T.A.H.I.T.I. project and the mysteries contained therein, although that story thread has been a bit played out. And of course, because of her TV heritage, plenty of fans are wishfully pushing for Lawless to play an Asgardian.

Will the showrunners take advantage of Lucy Lawless’ innate ability of flight? Only time will tell.
