Reactor

In celebration of the (awesome) second trailer, most of the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy, plus director James Gunn and Marvel EIC Kevin Feige hosted a Q&A on Facebook! As you would imagine, the cast is pretty hilarious, James Gunn answers most of his questions in full ecstatic CAPS LOCK mode, and Vin Diesel proves that he is the sweetest sentient tree on the face of the earth. We’ve grabbed some of the best answers for you here!

First, Let’s Get the News Out of the Way:

Ronn Miller asked: Will there be after credit scenes?
James Gunn: Yes.

Travis Moody got more specific. “Will we see Mystique in post-credits sequence?”
James Gunn: NOPE

Alexandre Garcez Galvão asked about “some easter egg from The Avengers 2 or 3 films?” and Kevin Feige said yes! WHAT WILL THEY BE.

One hopeful fellow named Lionel Tony Stark dared to ask: “Who got cast as THANOS?” And while Gunn didn’t answer the question, he did specify: “IT IS NOT VIN DIESEL. He is Groot.”

And Sam Harper wanted to know whether Kevin Feige does, in fact, have “a Scrooge McDuck-like pool of money with a depth gage [sic] to keep track of your fortune?”
Kevin Feige: “No.”

Guardians of the GalaxyFor Comics Fans:

Trevor Snyder asked: “Are there any particular Guardians of the Galaxy comic arcs you recommend people read before seeing the movie?”

James Gunn: “I recommend they read all the Abnett/Lanning comics or, heck, go in fresh. It makes sense whether or not you’ve read the comics.”

On the Shorn Head of Karen Gillan:

Sam Harper: “Did you feel more aerodynamic bald?”
James Gunn: “I tried tossing Karen around the room before and after baldness and she was indeed more aerodynamic afterwards.”
Karen Gillan: “I felt amazing bald. It was such a huge transition and I loved the transformational aspect.”

On the Importance of Swagger:

Rob Galafassi asked a vital compare/contrast question: “Who has more swagger, Starlord or Bert Macklin?”
Chris Pratt: “Really good question. And I appreciate it. I’d have to say Starlord. Although Bert Macklin is a close second.”

Batista is Probably Tougher Than You:

Jonathan Hurtado: Are you brave enough to pet Rocket???
Dave Bautista: Ya, of course!

Groot Guardians of the GalaxyVin Diesel Brings Heart to Everything He Does, Even Facebook Q&As:

Dan Monge asked  the most important question: “How many times did you have to say the line “I am Groot”?”
Vin Diesel: “Oh god… maybe a thousand? I don’t know. It felt like a thousand. James Gunn and I were having so much with it. So it could’ve been a thousand. And it was amazing to go in there and to work with someone who wanted to explore the character- we wanted each “I am Groot” to mean something different… It reminded me, as an actor, how much we can do with so littleand if we’re passionate about it, good thing can come from it.”

William Shammah asked the whole cast: “What was the most challenging thing about getting into character?” and Vin Diesel gave a heartfelt reply: “It was very personal- it was the month after the accident happened with my brother Paul Walker and it was the first time I had worked since. Although it was challenging, just to get back to work was therapeuticespecially as Groot. There was an innocence about the character that was just refreshingand it may have been more challenging under other circumstances, but at that time, it was very therapeutic.”

Charlie Riggall also asked the whole cast “Who were the first people you told when you found out you’d got the role in the film?” and again, Diesel came in with an answer so sweet that, well, just read it: “My son. He was so excited. Marvel and James Gunn had sent over a large envelope of conceptual art and there was a big two-page image of the whole cast, and I asked my three year old, “Which character do you think they want Daddy to play?” And he pointed to the tree! And that’s how I knew that this was a special role.”

He also answered Malae Elisara’s question of who would win between the Guardians or the Avengers but saying “*chuckles then grows into a large laugh.*”

Star-Lord Guardians of the Galaxy

The Squees of James Gunn Can be Heard in Distant Galaxies:

Vinni Policastro asked “Did you film everything you really wanted to?” and Gunn replied with words that make us very happy indeed: “Yes. The movie is just what I want it to be.”

Trevor Snyder delved into Gunn’s past: “How important would you say your Troma days were in helping you get ready to direct a movie of this size? Any lessons learned then you applied to the filming of Guardians of the Galaxy?”
James Gunn: “Well, I went to Troma and worked in the field instead of going to film school. I learned every aspect of making films from casting to location scouting to directing to editing to marketing. It was a great overall education. But what really helped me with a film of this size was, honestly, Chuck Roven the producer, grooming me to direct A-list films on the set of Scooby Doo. I owe him a lot.”

And, as a follow up, John Duarte asked: “What did your old Troma boss Lloyd Kaufman say to you after he found out you’re directing such a big budget movie like Guardians? Gunn’s answer made our whole week: “[Kaufman said] “PLEASE GIVE ME A CAMEO PLEASE PLEASE. So I did.”

Tracy Johnson asked about Gunn’s vision: “Did you have free reign to hire the designers you wanted?”

Gnn: “Yes, I did. Charlie Wood, our production designer, was one of my primary partners on this film. We started with long long discussions, lots of photos, and my love of the artist Chris Fosswho we actually hired to work on the movie. He’s a classic science fiction artist from the ’70s and ’80s.”

Gabriel Jesus Bastida wanted more info on Gunn’s influences: “So many. One of the biggest influences wasand no one is going to expect this answerMagritte’s Empire of Light paintings. I was also very influenced by many of the great space epics and science fiction films and westerns like the films of Sergio Leone. Not to mention of course the comics, especially Abnett and Lanning and Jim Starlin.”

Rebekah Armstrong complimented Gunn’s past work, and asked: “What was the factor that enticed you to take on Guardians?” Gunn’s answer makes us want to hug him until he squeaks: “I love raccoons, Marvel comics, and space operas. How could I pass this up? When would I [get] another chance. At one point in time our producers Jeremy Latcham and Jonathan Schwartz thought I was biologically engineered to make this movie. It’s everything I love.”

Finally, Alessio Pasquali asked Gunn how it felt “to direct Marvel Studios’ tenth independent film and its first to be the first non-Avengers property owned by Walt Disney Studios, even though Guardians of the Galaxy is connected to Avengers by Thanos? Gunn’s answer was succinct, and again, all-caps: “ORGASMIC.”

And, Most Important of All:

Sam Harper asked Chris Pratt abut his favorite song on the Walkman, and He Who Would Be Star-Lord replied: “O-o-h Child” by Five Stairstepswhich wasn’t my favorite right out of the gate but after listening to the album so many times over and over while getting in shape that’s the one song that has the right tempo for running quickly.”
