Locus is reporting the sudden passing of Michael Shea, author and 1983 World Fantasy Award winner for his novel Nifft the Lean and 2004 novella “The Growlimb.” His most recent efforts were two novels out from Tor Books, 2010’s The Extra and 2013’s Assault On Sunrise, both of them satirical sci-fi takes on reality television and the soullessness of fame, undoubtedly informed by Shea’s childhood in Culver City, California. His work also includes vibrant homages to Jack Vance and H.P. Lovecraft.

Shea is survived by his wife, author Lynn Cesar, and two children. Our sympathy goes out to them for their loss.
