When Pop Quizzes Lead To Books: Announcing Adam Christopher’s L.A. Trilogy!

Adam Christopher, author of Hang Wire, recently participated in an upcoming installment of our interview series, The Pop Quiz at the End of the Universe. While most of the talk centered around his latest novel, The Burning Dark (coming out on March 25th), in the course of conversation Christopher came up with an elaborate reason behind Raymond Chandler’s rejection of science fiction, musing that Chandler was a secret SF fan who had destroyed his manuscripts featuring a robot detective. But what would happen, Christopher wondered, if some of the stories survived?

Tor Books editor Paul Stevens was so interested in the idea that he encouraged Christopher to explore it in a story, and a few weeks later a sci-fi/noir mashup called “Brisk Money” was born! From Stevens:

I thought the premise of “lost” Chandler stories was very intriguing, so I encouraged Adam to explore that idea. I was quite happy when the novella “Brisk Money” arrived in my inbox several weeks later.

I thought the story was great, and I bought it for Tor.com. Adam also mentioned that he had more ideas for this character, so I crossed my fingers and hoped that he’d have more for me to look at soon. Sure enough, a few weeks later I received a call from agent Stacia Decker to ask if I was interested in three books to follow the characters introduced in “Brisk Money.” Of course I was.

“Brisk Money” is scheduled to run on Tor.com in July 2014. The first book of the LA Trilogy is currently scheduled for September 2015. Adam has come up with a great premise, and I’m really eager to see where he goes with these characters.

Adam Christopher has more on the trilogy itself:

The LA Trilogy is a series of three novels starring Ray, a robot detective, and his boss, a computer called Googol. Set in an alternative version of 1960s Los Angeles, each book will be more or less standalone, but together will form an over-arching story arc, with Brisk Money as the origin story. The series is going to be a hell of a lot of fun—it’s Raymond Chandler meets Lawrence Block, with robots – and is full of cultists, gangsters, spies, and dirty Hollywood secrets.

The LA Trilogy is completely separate from my far-future space opera series, The Spider Wars, which kicks off in March with The Burning Dark. I like to write across different styles and genres—I love space opera and science fiction, but I also love crime and noir, so this is a great opportunity to have some fun with another genre mash-up.

Look for ”Brisk Money” to debut on Tor.com in July, followed by the first book in the L.A. Trilogy in September 2015. We can’t wait for you read it!
