Game of Thrones season 3 A Storm of Swords split

Heads up! This article will have FULL SPOILERS for Game of Thrones season 3! And just to underscore that, the Game of Thrones panel at San Diego Comic Con opened with a montage of every character death in the show so far, set to Boyz II Men song “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday.”

Let’s take a look at the highlights from the panel.

SPOILERS AHEAD!

DRACARYS!

Here’s the hilarious In Memoriam video from the panel. Wow have a lot of people died in this series. I mean, you know but you don’t know really know until they pile it all together…

  • After filming the Red Wedding, Richard Madden, the actor who played Robb Stark cried on the flight home as people stared. He’s feeling a little lost now that filming for season 4 has begun. “It’s July and I kind of feel like I should be doing something!”
  • About 15 minutes into the panel, Jason Momoa (Khal Drogo from season 1) ran onto the stage, yelled “I’m not dead yet!”, kissed Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen) on the head (She responded, “My sun and stars!”) then ran off!
  • The showrunners had been waiting to pull off the Red Wedding ever since they began the show. Their intention was to give viewers that same urge that readers had to throw the book across the room.
  • Michelle Fairley (Catelyn Stark) had to do 20 takes of her anguished, final howl. When asked how she approached it, she stated, “It’s like a piece of music, you have to work your way through it.” When the key change in the band’s music during that scene, she said it felt like someone was walking over her grave.
  • “The Rains of Castemere” came close to being the show’s theme song, so everything would come full circle when the Red Wedding finally arrived.

Game of Thrones season 3 A Storm of Swords split

  • Charles Dance (Tywin Lannister) apparently gives Peter Dinklage “a nice little shoulder rub” after every take of scenes they have together “to make sure we love each other.”
  • The showrunners are really impressed by how self-policing the internet has been in regards to Game of Thrones spoilers.
  • A never-before-seen deleted scene was aired featuring Tywin and Grand Maester Pycelle speaking before Tywin’s first small council scene of the season. Pycelle comes on Tywin fishing and pleads for his position on the small council back. Tywin being Tywin, Pycelle ends up heading home with instructions to clean the fish Tywin caught.
  • George R. R. Martin commented on how the series is like a locomotive coming down the tracks while he’s still laying them. “They’re not here yet, but I can see the smoke on the other side of the hill.” The author is up for writing stories set far in Westeros’ past once the main series itself is done, but doesn’t feel the need to write about its immediate history or Robert’s Rebellion more than he will in the forthcoming books.
