Did Amazing Spider-Man 2 Just Cut Mary Jane From the Movie?

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that the character of Mary Jane Watson, played by Shailene Woodley in the upcoming Amazing Spider-Man 2, has been cut entirely from the film. The actress dropped the shocking news while talking about the upcoming film adaptation of Divergent in a recent interview with EW. Via ComingSoon.net:

“Of course I’m bummed. But I’m a firm believer in everything happening for a specific reason….based on the proposed plot, I completely understand holding off on introducing [Mary Jane] until the next film.”

Mary Jane’s scenes have apparently been moved to the third film in the franchise, which Sony Pictures recently announced as debuting on June 10, 2016, with a fourth film to follow on May 4, 2018. So what does this mean for Amazing Spider-Man 2? Spoilers and speculation ahead.

SPOILERS for Amazing Spider-Man 2 ahead.

Possibly the largest question regarding the plot of Amazing Spider-Man 2 is whether Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy character will die. Stone has been pictured on set wearing the same clothes from that fateful comics storyline but it is still unclear what the film’s plot has in store for the character.

Couple that with this photo of Gwen and Mary Jane meeting during a scene originally filmed for the sequel:

If Woodley’s Mary Jane has been moved to the third film, does this mean Gwen survives until then? Or will this meeting scene, if it’s not cut entirely, turn out to be a flashback?

This news oddly enough comes on the heels of speculation that actress Felicity Jones has been cast in the sequel to portray Felicia Hardy, also known as maybe-superpowered thief the Black Cat.

If true, the Black Cat would join a Spider-Man film that already features the introduction of Norman Osborn, Harry Osborn, Max Dillon as Electro, Paul Giamatti as the Rhino, and possibly Colm Feore as the Vulture. Director Marc Webb originally revealed that Mary Jane’s presence in the sequel was small, which may have been one of the reasons for the move. Perhaps it’s better that Mary Jane being given more of a chance to shine in the third film, rather than have to jostle for time in the crowded ASM2?
