The Telegraph and The Daily Mail’s Sunday edition are reporting that Matt Smith will be leaving Doctor Who in the 2013 Christmas special, airing one month after the show’s 50th anniversary. The Telegraph has posted the BBC press release, linked above.

Smith, who has been in the role of the Eleventh Doctor since 2010, said it had been “an honour” to play the part.

Spoilers for the recently concluded season ahead.

The speculation on Matt Smith’s end date on the show began today, as the BBC released an embargoed press release schedule to go live on Sunday, as reported by Bleeding Cool. The Daily Mail was the first to break The Silence the silence.

And eighth series has already been commissioned by the BBC with Steven Moffat at the helm and Jenna Louise-Coleman continuing on as Clara Oswin Oswald. Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor will bow out shortly before this new season in the 2013 Christmas special, which is rumored to begin filming later this summer after Smith finishes his work on the Ryan Gosling film How To Catch a Monster.

Steven Moffat on the departure:

Every day, on every episode, in every set of rushes, Matt Smith surprised me: the way he’d turn a line, or spin on his heels, or make something funny, or out of nowhere make me cry, I just never knew what was coming next. The Doctor can be clown and hero, often at the same time, and Matt rose to both challenges magnificently. And even better than that, given the pressures of this extraordinary show, he is one of the nicest and hardest-working people I have ever had the privilege of knowing. Whatever we threw at him – sometimes literally – his behaviour was always worthy of the Doctor.

But great actors always know when it’s time for the curtain call, so this Christmas prepare for your hearts to break, as we say goodbye to number Eleven. Thank you Matt – bow ties were never cooler.

There has been no announcement on who will be replacing Matt Smith in the role of the Doctor. Although considering recent revelations about a supposed “secret” Doctor played by John Hurt, there is speculation that we may have already met him!

Although if not, the Tor.com crew has some suggestions for who could play a female Twelfth Doctor, if Moffat and the BBC were inclined to go in that direction. (They’re pretty good, we think! Although one of them is somewhat busy sleeping as a living art exhibit at MOMA.)
