Gotta love when the internet gets together to do something great: this week’s Read Comics in Public Day has been co-opted into Women Read Comics in Public Day. (Check out this Tumblr for some great pictures.) But the fact is, women have always read comics, in public or otherwise. For the best example, you need only look above—that would be Audrey Hepburn reading Captain America.

Pause for a moment and bask in the coolness of that.

They read before the game! (Go Cubs!)

They read on coffee breaks!

They read artfully near playgrounds!

Jack Kirby’s granddaughter reads them!

But as we pointed out above, women have always read comics. Here are a couple girls reading the good captain, circa 1982:

Here they are reading them on the sidewalk:

Even just reading at home (circa 1953):

So we’re proud of the internet, but we’re also sad that the world at large doesn’t seem to realize that this has been going on for a long time. Basically since comics were invented. Women have got nothing to prove in this fight.

Stubby the Rocket is the Tor.com mascot. Stubby has also always read comics, but no one ever asks Stubby about that sort of thing.
