According to Deadline Hollywood, a television series based on the machinations of agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (from Marvel and Avengers continuity) has officially begun production on ABC. Joss Whedon is on board for the project, as per his deal with Disney to direct Avengers 2.
The day-to-day showrunning will be handled by husband and wife team Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen, who have worked with Joss on Dollhouse and Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, respectively. It is unconfirmed if Joss will write or direct the pilot or other episodes. ABC is also rumored to be developing a Hulk TV show.
No word yet if S.H.I.E.L.D. will see Cobie Smulders reprising her role as agent Maria Hill from the Avengers. She currently stars on How I Met Your Mother, although it is rumored that the upcoming season will be the show’s last, which would leave Smulders available to star in a S.H.I.E.L.D. show beginning in fall 2013.
