Upcoming SF Events in March

If there’s anything SF readers and watchers, gamers and otakus enjoy more than their particular hobbies, it’s getting together to talk with like minded people. Doing so on tor.com is great, as is doing it in person.

What follows is a list of some of the events that will happen over the month of March. It in no means tries to be comprehensive, but I do try for geographical and thematic variety. Feel free to add events near you, large or small, in the comments.

San Diego, CA
March 2-4

It may come as a surprise to some, but San Diego has events other than the ComicCon. Perhaps fewer people attend, but great fun is still to be had at CondorCon with guests Lowell Cunningham (creator of Men in Black) and Mike bocianowski (creator of The Yets!)

March 9-11
Katwijk aan Zee, The Netherlands

This year’s Beneluxcon, and event held for the umpteenth time (the organizers have stopped counting) is called KatCon. Guests of honor are Jan J.B. Kuipers and Gwyneth Jones.

March 16-18, 2012
Atlanta, GA

DragonCon is not the only event held in Atlanta. After toying with the idea for awhile, Anime O-tekku, Georgia Tech’s anime club started MomoCon in 2005. Since then the event has grown and guests include voice actors, comic artists, academics and more.

March 16-18, 2012
Anaheim, CA

Wondercon has moved from San Francisco to Anaheim for it’s 26th year. Like many very big events, there are so many things to mention that, the easiest is for me to just to send you to their website.

International Conference on the Fantastic in the Arts
March 21-25
Orlando, FL

The International Association for the Fantastic in the Arts organizes a conference every year where creators and scholar discuss the genre. This year’s theme is “The Monstrous Fantastic” and featured guests are China Miéville, Kelly Link, Jeffrey J. Cohen and Brian Aldiss

World Horror Convention
March 29th-April 1st
Salt Lake City, UT

The theme for this year is, appropriately enough, “At the Mountains of Madness”. The convention has a great variety of guests, including Sherrilyn Kenyon, Mike Mignola, P.N. Elrod, Joe R. & Karen Landsdale and Robert McCammon.

Dead by Dawn
March 29th-April 1st
Edinburgh, UK

Scotland’s horror film festival features both new films by independent producers and classics of the genre. You can sign up for either a full pass or get individual tickets. The best way to get info on the festival is to sign up for the e-newsletter on their website.

René Walling is a fan of SF, animation and comics, this has led him to co-chair Anticipation, the 2009 Worldcon, be involved with fps magazine for more than a decade, write reviews of francophone short fiction for The Portal, and start Nanopress, a Canadian small press. He looks forward to living on Mars where he would benefit from having more than 24 hours in a day.
