LeVar Burton delivered the opening keynote address at the Tools of Change for Publishing conference on February 13 and placed the emphasis on science fiction literature as the driving impetus behind the very tools that are currently redefining publishing, outreach, and reading habits across all ages.

He begins with an anecdote on being a young kid growing up in the 60s seeing Uhura on Star Trek, and knowing, just by virtue of her presence on the bridge, that he had a place in the future of mankind.

It’s a great keynote, so check it out when you get 15 minutes to spare. For more information on what Burton is up to in the digital publishing arena these days, read the coverage form Publishers Weekly.

And if you like, wish LeVar Burton a happy 55th birthday today!
