Did you hear that explosion? It’s the sound of geek girl sites popping up all over the web!

Geek girl sites are run by women (and sometimes with a few guys in the mix) for geeks of all genders. These sites cover a broad spectrum of SF/F pop culture news. Some of them operate from a specific angle while others simply declare their love of geek culture just because they can.

As a lifelong geek girl, I’m reveling in the existence of these amazing sites. For one thing, they validate who I am and the genre entertainment I love. (Validation that’s not always easy to come by in fandom, I might add.) They also offer female-oriented geek content that I didn’t realize was lacking until they started publishing it.

The rise of geek girl blogs is a testament to the power and existence of women in all of the various fandoms. We’ve always been around, but now, through blogs and other social networks, we can connect in greater numbers than ever before. I mean, is a geek girl bloggers panel at Comic Con far behind?! I’d pay good money to attend such an event (or at least the convention entrance fee, heh).

Anyway, given the prevalence of geek girl sites and their superlative content, I decided to round them up. Here are the Top Ten Geek Girl Sites in alphabetical order. Bookmark them today:

1) Alien Romances – Launched by author Rowena Cherry, Alien Romances is run by a consortium of SF/F women authors covering genre books, films, the craft of writing, and singular topics like “strange looking animal penises.”

2) Fantasy & SciFi Lovin’ News & Reviews – Site owner SQT and her fellow contributors feature a variety of reviews and also SF/F related news, trailers, opinion pieces, and giveaways. Check out her coverage of The Rest of the 2011 Movie Releases: Anything Worth Watching?

3) Geeky Girls Love Sci-Fi – This site goes for the gold, delivering “the latest gossip, chat, reviews and interviews from your favourite favourite sci-fi and fantasy films, TV shows, comics and books….” To sample their wares, take a gander at First Look! Misfits Series 3.

4) GeekMom – The GeekMom team covers a dizzying range of SF/F and pop culture goodness geared toward — wait for it — moms who are also geeks. Categories include technology, health, toys, reviews, video games, and the mom with a bionic leg (or as her son likes to call it, “Decepticon”).

5) Lisa Paitz Spindler – Ms. Spindler has been blogging for over ten years about SF/F topics in books, films, and television. The most unique feature is her Danger Gal series where she profiles notable SF/F heroines in all types of mediums.

6) Pink Raygun: “Fangirl” is sooo 2007″ – This site is “a girly place to talk science fiction” but its real girrrl power comes from its goal of featuring underrepresented “geeks, fans, and creators.” At Pink Raygun, you’ll discover news, commentary, interviews, and free genre-inspired pumpkin carving templates.

7) SciFiChick.com: News and Reviews – Blog proprietor Angela provides reviews of SF/F books, films, and television shows. In addition to her genre news coverage, she also hosts giveaways. Here’s her take on the Blu-Ray of Green Lantern.

8) Smart Girls Love SciFi & Paranormal Romance – This is a “blog about science fiction and paranormal romance books, movies, TV, video games, and more books…” You name it, Charlie’s got it for ya…like “10 of the coolest girls in sci-fi entertainment.”

9) Spacefreighters Lounge – The brainchild of science fiction romance fan Laurie A. Green, Spacefreighters Lounge offers a mix of book news, cool science facts (check out this “3D printer“!), and a peek into the writing life of the blog’s three contributors.

10) The Mary Sue: A Guide To Girl Geek Culture – This site’s goal is twofold: it “hopes to be a place for two things: highlighting women in the geek world, and providing a prominent place for the voices of geek women.” The articles cover a wide range of topics and address complex subjects such as women gamers.

Now I’d like to invite you to nominate another geek girl blog here. Small, large, or in between — they must be out there. Let’s give ’em some geekerific love!
