New York Comic Con: Saturday Costume Parade

New York Comic Con continued on Saturday with even more costumed fans than we saw yesterday! We tried to take pictures of all the best cosplayers, but some how managed to NOT get a photo of the guy totally nailing the Whale Probe from Star Trek IV. (This costume may or may not have been invented by Stubby the Rocket and we may or may not have but most certainly did go down a very dark area while riffing on costumes we wish we’d seen.)

Either way, we’ve got over 30 of our favorite costumes lined up for you, and a special appearance from Jewel “Kaylee” Staite! But first let’s hear it for the Jurassic Park Technician above. The raptor inside of the egg was actually a movable puppet the woman was manipulating with her left hand! An amazing and elegant idea.

Apologies ahead of time for the varying quality of pictures. You’re seeing three different cameras at work here. (One of them VERY crummy.)

There were a lot of really adorable couples. The kind that really nail home the unceasing loneliness that you live under. The kind that enjoy a playful, nerdy love that, with each passing year, you know you’ll never experience. And why would anyone love you? Look at you. You’re crying in the Comic Con food court.

First up, a super cute Jedi-era Han and Leia. Do you think he knows who her brother is yet? Or maybe he just found out, judging by his face.

We managed to find Leia’s mom, Padme Amidala, and her ill-advised husband, Anakin Skywalker, too. Practically on the eve of Leia’s birth! Oh, Leia. Obi-Wan never told you how Anakin went to Mustafar for cigarettes and never came back.

These two were a pretty dead-on Baltar and Six. We’re pretty sure that after we took this picture they headed to Times Square and snuck up behind Ron Moore.

The absence of Trekkies was lamented by us on Friday, but they must have heard our bloggery cry, as we saw officers from both the original, reboot, and Next Gen eras on Saturday, including these adorable cadets.

We took this shot a bit secretively, but we had to when we saw this woman in a specially cut TNG-era uniform working on her iPad. An iPad which, at first glance, seems like a PADD prop from the show. The reality of it is a bit astounding. The only thing left that separates this costume from our current workday lives is the particular style of her jacket. And even that isn’t so weird. Star Trek has never felt so genuine.

One more Trek photo for you. And it’s a doozy.

Perfect. Absolutely perfect. If this isn’t the surprise ending of Star Trek 2 then someone is getting a very angry letter.

Here’s a particularly adorable image. (Her dad was dressed as Indiana Jones.) Just after this, she actually rode away on the back wheels of R2! You can see the fellow with the remote control just behind her.

PORKINS LIVES. Spread the word. The Rebellion continues.

There were three or four groups of Ghostbusters wandering around the convention, so you had to find some way to really stand out. The addition of Louis the Keymaster was particularly brilliant, we thought. His soup strainer helmet even had blinking lights!

Another Ghostbusters standout: the Hello Kitty proton pack. (You can’t make out the Hello Kitty logos, but they’re there in two places.) This pack also had changing lights and displays telling you when it was powered up.

A common complaint about Comic Cons in general now is that they tend to only be a teensy bit focused on comics. So it’s nice to see some creative comic characters, like Doctor Octopus here.

And Li’l Sinestro. (The kid had a plastic cap on mimicking Sinestro’s weird hairline and it looked eeeeerily convincing.)

Of course, the more prevalent the comic character is on the screen (big or little), the more likely you are to see them cosplayed. (Lots of Heath Ledger Jokers around. Still.) Not that one can complain when it results in a family of Lokis.

Some days you just can't get rid of a bomb! (Click to enlarge. The photo. Not the bomb.)

What does one call a group of Lokis? “Loki”? What’s the collective noun for them? “We’re in trouble now. It’s a RUSE of Loki!” Something like that?

We’re going to ponder this for a second. In the meantime, help Adam West’s Batman get rid of this bomb!

You can keep your Boba Fetts and your Vaders and your Slave Leias. All we need is Dark Helmet.

(His faceplate actually came down, too, just like in Spaceballs!)

Back to the Future was a popular costume choice, as well, and we saw some great Marty McFlys of both genders, but no one matched the three women below, who came as Marty in all three movies!

Best of all, we learned that Marty’s rainbow hat from 2015 is now widely available. (And only $25!) We know what you’ll see us wearing at the next Tor.com meetup!

Also, just so we’re sure we’re not crazy, you can definitely see a huge, menacing, mirror-eyed dark lord to the right of this text, yes? This isn’t just someone who traipses through our nightmares now?

Elsewhere at the con you could get your picture taken with the Back to the Future Delorean and a pretty convincing double of Marty McFly! We love how skeptical he seems about the year 2011 here. Not enough things are hovering, obviously.

Another amazing entry: Darkwing Duck! Megavolt! Morgana Macawber! We had to look up that last one! Let’s. Get. Dangerous.

This little cosplayer from 9 was amazing. His steampunk mom looks pretty rad too!

What if the Matrix was actually real, and agents were chasing Morpheus through Comic Con? It might look something like this. (Which is to say, it might look awesome.) Also Neo would probably trip over everything while Trinity did parkour all over the place.

It used to be that Death from Neil Gaiman’s Sandman series was the costume you’d see over and over at conventions, but these days it’s particularly rare. We were tickled to find one last, lingering, Death.

Finally, as an extra special treat, the totally gorgeous Jewel Staite, who let us take a pic of her even though the sign said not to! We very much appreciate it, Ms. Staite. You are a credit to spaceship engineers everywhere.

Check back with us tomorrow! We have lots more stuff coming down the pipeline for you.

Stubby the Rocket is the mascot of Tor.com, occasionally the voice of its staff, and at one point suggested “Picard’s family, after the fire” as an NYCC costume wish. Yeah.
