Earlier today, it was announced that 20th Century Fox (kinda funny that they still call themselves that, ain’t it?) will be adapting Isaac Asimov’s The Caves of Steel for the big screen. Their earlier foray into Asimov’s Robots canon, 2004’s I, Robot, was quite successful financially and provided some of the most purely crystallized Will Smith moments yet (little though they had to do with Asimov).
Although I have the reasonably cynical view of Hollywood that anyone who spends more than five minutes pondering it inevitably develops, and although The Caves of Steel was one of my favorite books when I was a kid (the fact that it was SF and a detective story to boot was catnip), I have a feeling this could be an interesting movie. The human/robot uneasiness—not to mention the Earth/spacer antipathy—could lead to some meaty drama.
So, what do you think? Good, bad, indifferent? Who would you cast as grizzled cop Elijah Bailey and his gleaming, buttoned-up robot partner Daneel Olivaw?
