Saturday Morning Cartoons: “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” and “Screenplay”

The Devil Went Down to Georgia: A classic folktale told with some of the eeriest puppets ever seen. The soundtrack, performed by Primus, is a cover of the Charlie Daniels Band’s song by the same name. For those who want to see more animation by Mike Johnson, he went on to co-direct Corpse Bride. (4:38 minutes)

Screenplay: The longest single shot it is possible to do with film is 10 minutes long. Puppet animator Barry Purves pushes this to the limit: Screenplay is almost entirely a single shot – a single mistake and everything would have to be redone. Also, for those who don’t have sound on their computer, the chorus uses British Sign Language. (10:55 minutes)

René Walling is a fan of SF, animation and comics, this has led him to co-chair Anticipation, the 2009 Worldcon, be involved with fps magazine for more than a decade, write reviews of francophone short fiction for The Portal, and start Nanopress, a Canadian small press. He looks forward to living on Mars where he would benefit from having more than 24 hours in a day.
